Say You’re One of Them

In numerous regards, the world’s consideration has avoided present day Africa as of late, no doubt because of the shaky local circumstances in different pieces of the world. As of late, be that as it may, the assortment of stories composed by Uwem Akpan, Say You’re One of Them, has taken back to the front line the entirety of the agony and challenge of life in Africa right now. The humankind that gets through the words not just pulls at the heartstrings of the peruser, yet additionally offers solid expressions about social clash, class battles and other social wonders. This examination won't just talk about Akpan’s work, yet in addition these entwined issues inside the work. Eventually, the work will be better valued and seen, yet in addition, current issues will be uncovered. Conversation of the Various Issues of Cultural Conflict inside the Story When the exploration was presented, the fact of the matter was made that Akpan’s work was profoundly passionate, yet in addition offers solid social expressions. Making that attestation a stride further is conceivable when utilizing explicit models from the work to distinguish and talk about the different parts of social clash to be found in the story. The first of the regions of social clash which develops in the work is the huge gap between the monetary classes inside present day Africa. An early story in the work recounts a little youngster whose sister goes to road prostitution with the end goal for him to have the option to stand to go to class an unmitigated endeavor to get away from the lower class and rise in African culture. So exceptional is this longing to propel that extraordinary measures are taken by helpless Africans to make a decent living: â€Å"When Baby was conceived, we pawned 75% of his garments to settle debts† (Akpan, 2008, p. 13). In this way, individual Africans are in truth socially partitioned along financial lines, in spite of hailing from a similar country. Language is additionally a separating factor in advanced Africa, or all the more explicitly, the way that someone’s voice sounds not exclusively could separate them from others in a social setting, however in certainty could prompt substantial damage for those of one culture who experience restriction from another, as found in this extract from the work: â€Å"He was an obvious objective for the irregular brutality that seized the land†¦a basic thing like his intonation could give him away† (Akpan, 2008, p. 93). This is a fascinating component of social clash with regards to a profoundly various landmass it is an extraordinary kind of circumstance whereby somebody who simply talks in an unexpected manner in comparison to others could in certainty set them apart and lead to broke subcultures, however that is actually what Akpan is dep icting. Moreover, there is a subculture of savagery that is predominant in the Africa of today; to be increasingly explicit, quite a bit of Africa is administered at the present by affluent warlords, who basically manufacture their own militaries and make their own principles for their own headway. Essentially, these people are utilizing power to distance and persecute their own kindred Africans, keeping the feeble in a condition of neediness and keeping them from potential upgrades that would permit them to outperform their oppressors: â€Å"Our northern commanders are liable for the extraordinary destitution in the land† (Akpan, 2008, p. 314). Subsequently, we see the foundation of another culture of the incredible over that of the frail. This culture is similarly to some degree prohibitive, as the punishment for attempting to get away from it would be ruthlessness, best case scenario, and passing even under the least favorable conditions. Changes in the Culture in the Story In Say You’re One of Them, there are major developments to African culture that can be seen when looking all the more carefully at the focuses that are made in work; the way of life is basically moving from one of pleased customs and a grasping of the assorted variety of the different countries of the mainland to an increasingly partitioned one, where contrasts in monetary status, language and capacity to retaliate against the individuals who have the ability to demolish each other has outweighed everything else (Mwaria, et al, 2004). A significant point should be made here-despite the fact that what's going on in Africa as indicated by Akpan is unquestionably troubling, it isn't special to Africa, nor is it constrained to lands where opportunity is not exactly generally accessible. This can be brought up with an investigate different societies where division is muddling matters at present. A Study of Other Cultures Like Africa, the United States is a mixture of various societies and furthermore like Africa, has experienced a lot of culture conflict as of late. This contention has occurred in a few assorted societies and has partitioned individuals in a few distinct manners. To start with, along lines of ethnicity, the US has seen a restored degree of attention to the key contrasts in individuals because of the awful fear based oppressor demonstrations of September 11, 2001 on American soil. As a result of this essential occasion, those wishing to move to the US from different countries, regardless of whether legitimately or illicitly, have met with restriction running from scorn to shock and demonstrations of ridiculous viciousness (Moser, 2000). No doubt like Africa, the assorted variety of culture that made America such an interesting spot has been watered down in a whirlwind of bias, dread and bogus impressions around some ethnic gathering. Rather than bringing new societies into the American scene and afterward permitting them to acclimatize into the overarching American culture, individuals are being prohibited from the chance to do as such from the earliest starting point, denying them of chance, yet in addition smothering the progression of American culture from inside. Strategically, Americans have additionally shaped subcultures that generally have been in a lot of contention. Ongoing years have seen contrasts in political outlook become key issues that as opposed to uniting these people for solid discussion, have much of the time isolated people to the drawback of the political procedure (Shogan, 2002). Now and again, this distinction has likewise turned unpredictable in more than one occurrence as wars of words now and then transform into demonstrations of viciousness. In conclusion, class envy is additionally fit as a fiddle in America, making social clashes, particularly given the current desperate financial atmosphere on the planet. Tied near the policy centered issues of the country, financially assorted individuals are generally partitioned by an absence of comprehension of each other’s culture-a culture characterized by cash and benefit or the nonattendance thereof. By and large Analysis of the Reading Akpan’s book opened the eyes of the scientist from numerous points of view, not the least of which was as far as increasing an understanding that social contrasts can either make a superb mix of various customs and thoughts or can separate individuals and lead them to demolish others. This acknowledgment evoked in the specialist the inclination that assorted variety must be grasped, in case its capacity expend and wreck one culture because of another. End The exploration has made significant focuses about culture, decent variety, and the unending difference in the human condition. Taking everything into account, maybe the best point to detract from the exploration is the way that without a resistance in any event and grasping, best case scenario of assorted variety, nobody can really be free.

Understand Venture Failure Stigmatization -Myassignmenthelp.Com

Question: Examine About The Understand Venture Failure Stigmatization? Answer: Presentation From youth, my best minutes in life had been the point at which I was playing football. Indeed, I can't recall when I began playing football however, as grew up, football was in me, and I was in football. At the end of the day, this game infers the most elevated level of fulfillment in my life. Additionally, its most fascinating piece was spilling the ball and having cheers everywhere throughout the onlookers. I considered football to be the main elective that could take me to my Neverland. I really observed numerous open doors in my ability in addition to the mental fortitude I had picked up from days of yore when I began playing football. My motivations were by at that point, the well known footballers who among others incorporated any semblance of Christian Ronaldo, john terry, Frank Lampard, and Henry among others. There came a groundbreaking open door when my secondary school group was to play against Forest Rovers. This club plays a well known group and it so happened that it was one of the top clubs in the association. The clubs the executives with the expectation of enlisting an institute group, composed a match between my school and a competition group inside a similar region in which, the best entertainers would irrefutably be chosen to join the clubs foundation. My group by then was well outfitted with excessively skilled folks, a large portion of Couse like me. The excessively gifted fellows werent anything exceptional to me. At the end of the day, I was damn certain and sure; I would be among the stars to be chosen for the group foundation. Much to my dismay that it was simply yet bogus certainty that I had. At the point when we launched the game, obviously, not surprisingly, my colleagues and different understudies anticipated extraordinary execution from me. As it were, I was the group chief. The game was all ideal however it was too serious as all players needed to abuse their best to get an opportunity to be a piece of Forest Rovers. Besides, players to be chosen were to be paid on a week after week premise. The game went far up to additional time with the rivals having two players off because of red cards. Be that as it may, they figured out how to safeguard until punishments. This second truly appeared as though those minutes in moti on pictures when I missed the main objective in the punishments that would cause my group to qualify. We lost the game to the contention school. Any expectations, which my group, my mentor, and individual understudies may have had in me grabbing of the goalkeeper to get the show on the road into the net all finished with me warming and dismissing the ball from the net. I was normally furious with myself, holding it to my obligation to have spared my group and getting a lifetime opportunity that would conceivably get me offered to an increasingly unmistakable club like Barcelona, Manchester City, and Arsenal bookkeeping others. I continued replaying the memory in my mind, and I was unable to find out how I kicked the ball out, leaving the immense objective with only a little guardian. In the event that reality, I would see myself scoring the punishment in my mind however this would not mirror any positive marvel as it was only a creative mind sourcing from the humiliation and disillusionment. Obviously, it is one of the most exceedingly terrible disappointments life has ever tossed at me, and it truly left me frantic at myself. The experience, the main elective I needed to take was the suggestions to chill off. This, in any case, shocked me as I suspected my associates would be a lot angrier as I caused the flaw. From this, I discovered that disappointments are normal happenings throughout everyday life, which can be so discouraging and frustrating from the outset. In significant reflection, I found that slip-ups and disappointments are now and again positive supporters of the achievement of life. It is altogether right that considerable deficiencies in life are not immediately overlooked. Each time I play football, I get a memory of that second, and I believe I can't be as imprudent as I was that ady, to miss the punishment that could have emphatically influenced my life. I later presumed that in spite of the fact that I missed joining the clubs foundation, I could gener ally be careful for my other up and coming chances. Actually, my disappointment gives me the accept that I can win whenever I fall into such chances References Alberstein, Michal. Paleoneurology and the evolution of mind Free Essays

What is â€Å" insight † ? What is â€Å" naturally customized conduct † ? How make these conduct structures partner to different features of the natural study of the vitalize creatures that have them, and to their generative organic science in curious? How does knowledge partner to learned conduct and all the more explicitly, to human development? â€Å" Biologically modified conduct ‘ clarifies most, however non all, non-warm blooded creature craniate conduct. Early surveies of non-warm blooded creature craniates portrayed conduct as â€Å" loaded † - a term that proposed that such practices are fixed and invariable. Later surveies reported both an evaluation of flexibleness and the capacity to larn new conduct shapes by non-warm blooded animal craniates. We will compose a custom exposition test on Paleoneurology and the development of psyche or then again any comparative point just for you Request Now Such surveies have other than demonstrated that well evolved creatures, as a rule, have a more prominent repertory of learned practices than before craniates. â€Å" Biologically customized conduct † is, henceforth, better comprehended as an extent of modified practices which have expanded abnormally with the advancement of the warm blooded animal natural composite. The neurological balance for learned conduct and insight are, in large bit, because of changes in the generative framework. Inside treatment premier happened in the advancement of reptilians. In the advancement of placental warm blooded animals, there was non just inner preparation, yet adjacent to embryological improvement in utereo. Such a generative framework gives a balance to the vitalize being to transform into a created area before holding to go up against the outer universe. Placentation, a female parent ‘s capacity to give nourishments and O to a creating incipient organism, is non without burdens ; in vitalize creatures, for example, the higher Primatess, the female parent ‘s blood conduit and the creating undeveloped organism blood waterway have a nearby association with the placenta. In numerous placental well evolved creatures, there is a rather non-permeable layer, which isolates the maternal circulation system from the embryologic circulatory system, while leting nourishments to experience. On the off chance that there is significant freak in the incipient organism, which is reflected in the embryologic blood conduit, the female parent ‘s circulation system will non connect with the freak and will non deliver antibodies, which would execute the undeveloped organism. In the higher Primatess, this layer is significantly more penetrable and substantially more proficient in the transmittal of nourishments. A drawback is that any major embryologic freak, which is reflected in the embryologic circulatory system, will deliver antibodies against the freak ; this typically outcomes in self-produced fetus removal or premature birth. Uterine advancement has helped vertebrates protect the more noteworthy accomplishment of their offspring. The mammalian continuance plot is known as the â€Å" K conspire, † and it depends on a high parental putting resources into specie perseverance. Encouraging a littler figure of posterity guarantees a higher per centum of those posterity will make generative adulthood. A decline in birth figure is related with birth of unrecorded youthful in many warm blooded animals. This plan is not quite the same as the craniate â€Å" R conspire, † where the parent delivers a major figure of eggs, which when treated produce a major figure of juvenile. The distinction in these two perseverance plans can be upheld by the various mentalities toward expire. In universes ( and different warm blooded creatures ) expire of juvenile well evolved creatures is a genuine physical issue ; in vertebrates the perish of a hatchling is the guideline of nature, and continuance is the prohibition . The incitement - reaction cringle portrays a significant part of the conduct of prior craniates. A centripetal information comes into the craniate encephalon, which is connected to a generalization engine finished result. A praised representation of â€Å" organically modified conduct † is the generative conduct of the three-spined Stickleback of the Rhine/North Sea. An outside occasion triggers a progression of naturally connected practices, which results in fruitful propagation. As spring happens in North Sea, there is more sunshine. This invigorates the pineal secretory organ of the female, which, in twist, flags the nerve center, which delivers a neurotransmitting concoction to the pituitary secretory organ. This in twist results in the secernment of pituitary endocrines, which animates the ovaries to deliver 1000s of eggs. This gives the female a swollen stomach and is a â€Å" mark incitement † to the male prickleback. Accordingly, the male does a â€Å" crisscro ss move, † which is alluded to as a â€Å" fixed activity structure. † The move, in twist, goes about as an imprint incitement to the female, who follows the male to the home, and through an additional arrangement of gestural incitements and fixed activity structures, travels through the home to stop the eggs. The male so disregards the eggs with sperm. Regular decision favors the keeping of these neurological tracts in the guys and females since they effectively capacity to deliver preparation ; to set it the other way, if a female has a neurological change where she would non recognize the crisscross move, she will non have the option to repeat. In a progression of investigations, Tinbergen and his understudies had the option to demo that the proud midsection of the female prickleback is the starting imprint incitement. Bringing male prickleback up in whole separation, they brought them into the H2O with both populating females each piece great similarly as with metal lineations of females with prideful mid-regions. In any case ( and in any event, when the lineation of the female was terribly twisted ) , the guys delivered the crisscross move. It was â€Å" designed † in their temperament. Individual vitalize creatures, henceforth, have little direct contribution to adjusting conduct successions. When the female has laid her eggs, and they have been prepared, that speaks to the terminal of parental contributing. It is non hard to perceive how clime or other change can rapidly stop a full species that depends on naturally customized conduct for generation. The nonattendance of daytime for an individual spring in the North Sea would mean the terminal of prickleback propagation. Youthful well evolved creatures are brought into the world debilitated and ward, and they experience a drawn-out diaper days and youngster of cultivating completely reliant on adult coevals. Since the parental contributing of warm blooded animals is the consideration of extremely little figure of posterity, the obligation falls mainly on females. There was other than an advancement of mammary secretory organs for this postal supporting period. During this clasp of shortcoming, the vivify being has the opportunity to recognize the universe, while being feed and secured. This generative arrangement of warm blooded creatures, subsequently, permits the well evolved creature scholarly cerebral mantle to coordinate and disguise the tactile examples the vivify being has encountered. The invigorate being is using insight - the â€Å" capacity to construct a perceptual hypothetical record of the universe inside your caput † ( Jerison ) . The warm blooded animal encephalon has formed into a development, which gave the balance to both educated conduct and insight. The capacity of the encephalon is to implement a hypothetical record of the universe on centripetal informations, and flexibly suitable reactions to it. This is non an entirely new improvement ; it speaks to an advancement of the scholarly cerebral mantle as a go between perceptual experience and reaction ( engine finished result ) , and the incorporating of contribution from an intense sound-related tactile framework. Learned conduct and knowledge are non the equivalent. Learned conduct is the capacity of an energize being to screen through a variety of conceivable social outcomes, and decision which conduct is fitting. When driving an auto, for delineation, a man needs to pick when it is fitting to turn directly at a rosy obvious radiation. Learned conduct is part of the well evolved creature structure, however it is differentially disseminated ; universes have a huge capacity for educated conduct, contrasted with the restricted degrees of different warm blooded creatures. The cardinal record is the scholarly cerebral mantle. Decision conduct is situated in the frontal flap. Universes have the best capacity to recognize, form, and disguise many convoluted hypothetical records of the including universe. Insight and scholarly conduct are fundamental for universes to keep a cultural world as time goes on. In the expressions of Ward Goodenough, â€Å" human advancement is the rules of conduct learned and comprehended by individuals from a general public. Not all individuals from the general public gain proficiency with a similar set or extent of standards, and this recognizes the rank is a various sub-gatherings of the general public. † The capacity of well evolved creature youthful, during socialization, to larn the practices fitting for perseverance in their condition and in participation inside cultural gatherings, is essentially the capacity to acquire human advancement. This capacity recognizes these well evolved creatures from the â€Å" troublesome wired † organically customized conduct of non-warm blooded animals. There are numerous warm blooded animals that are solitary ( for example a feline ) , and they do hold learned practices, which they acquired during the reliance time frame. Social warm blooded animals, in any case, have the specific standards of scholarly practices. Culture is, subsequently, the composite that permits universes to keep cultural world as time goes on. This is vague to universes, in any case, since every single cultural well evolved creature exchange with the issues of collective life. During childhood, the child watches the universe around him/her and disguises the practices of adults. Kids in cultural gatherings so play together, in light of the fact that dramatization is the example of adult practices. Human development, in the expressions of Ralph Holloway, is characterized as the â€Å" punishment of subjective signifier on the earth.

His work, along with the work of psychologist Mary Ainsworth, contributed to the development of attachment theory.?? Bowlby believed that children are born with a biologically-programmed tendency to seek and remain close to attachment figures. This provides nurturance and comfort, but it also aids in the child’s survival. Sticking close to a caregiver ensures that the child’s needs are met and that he or she is protected from dangers in the environment. Known For Being the originator of attachment theoryResearching child developmentInfluencing modern-day psychology, education, child care, and parenting Early Life Edward John Mostyn Bowlby was born in London to an upper-middle-class family. Believing that too much parental affection and attention would spoil a child, his parents spent only a small amount of time with him each day. At the age of seven, he was sent to boarding school, which he would later describe as a traumatic experience. Bowlby went on to attend Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied psychology and spent time working with delinquent children. After graduating from Cambridge, Bowlby volunteered at a school to gain experience and consider his career goals. His work at the school with two maladjusted children set the course of his future and inspired him to become a child psychiatrist. He then studied medicine at University College Hospital, followed by studying psychiatry at Maudsley Hospital. During this time, Bowlby also studied at the British Psychoanalytic Institute and was initially influenced by the work of Melanie Klein, a psychologist who created the play therapy technique. He eventually became dissatisfied with Klein’s approach, believing that it focused too much on children’s fantasies and not enough on events in the environment, including the influence of parents and caregivers. After becoming a psychoanalyst in 1937, he served in the Royal Army Medical Corps during World War II. In 1938, he married a woman named Ursula Longstaff and together they had four children. Once the war was over, Bowlby became Director of the Tavistock Clinic, and in 1950 he became a mental health consultant to the World Health Organization (WHO). Career and Theory Bowlby’s early work with children led him to develop a strong interest in the subject of child development. He became particularly interested in how separation from caregivers impacted children.?? After studying the subject for some time, he began to develop his ideas on the importance of attachment on child development. In 1949, WHO commissioned Bowlby to write a report on the mental health of homeless children in Europe. In 1951, the resulting work Maternal Care and Mental Health was published. In it, he wrote, “…the infant and young child should experience a warm, intimate, and continuous relationship with his mother (or permanent mother substitute) in which both find satisfaction and enjoyment.” After the publication of the influential report, Bowlby continued to develop his attachment theory. Bowlby drew on a variety of subjects,?? including cognitive science, developmental psychology, evolutionary biology, and ethology (the science of animal behavior). His resulting theory suggested that the earliest bonds formed by children with their caregivers have a tremendous impact that continues throughout life. Bowlby had trained as a psychoanalyst and, much like Sigmund Freud, believed that the earliest experiences in life have a lasting impact on development. According to Bowlby, attachment also serves to keep the infant close to the mother, thus improving the childs chances of survival. He suggested that both mothers and infants had evolved to develop an innate need for proximity. By maintaining this closeness, infants are more likely to receive the care and protection that they need to ensure their survival. Bowlby was also influenced by the work of Konrad Lorenz, a zoologist and ethologist who demonstrated that attachment was both innate and aided in survival. In Lorenz’s well-known 1935 study on imprinting, he was able to show that young geese would imprint on attachment figures in the environment within a certain critical period after hatching. Lorenz was even able to get newly-hatched geese to imprint on him and view him as a “mother” figure. This revealed that not only is attachment innate but that there is also a critical period during which the formation of attachment relationships is possible. Lorenz’s research found that after a certain period (approximately 32 hours for geese), an attachment was not likely to occur. The central theme of Bowlby’s attachment theory is that mothers who are available and responsive to their infants needs establish a sense of security. The baby knows that the caregiver is dependable, which creates a secure base for the child to feel safe to explore the world. Attachment Theory Bowlby defined attachment as a “lasting psychological connectedness between human beings. His ethological theory of attachment suggests that infants have an innate need to form an attachment bond with a caregiver. This is an evolved response that increases a childs chances of survival; babies are born with a number of behaviors, such as crying and cooing, and caregivers are biologically programmed to respond to these signals and attend to the babys needs. While mothers are often associated with this role as primary caregivers and attachment figures, Bowlby did believe that infants could form such bonds with others. The formation of the attachment bond offers comfort, security, and nourishment, but Bowlby noted that feeding was not the basis or purpose of this attachment, allowing bonds to be formed with fathers and other significant caregivers. Bowlby also suggested that attachment forms in a series of stages: During the first part of the pre-attachment phase, babies recognize their primary caregiver but do not yet have an attachment. Their crying and fussing draw the attention and care of the parent, which is rewarding to both the child and the caregiver. As this stage progresses through about three months, infants begin to recognize the parent more and develop a sense of trust.During the indiscriminate attachment phase, infants show a distinct preference for the primary caregivers, as well as certain secondary caregivers, in their lives.During the discriminate attachment period, children form a strong attachment to one individual and will experience separation distress and anxiety when parted from that person. Finally, during the multiple attachment phases, children begin to develop strong attachments to people beyond the primary caregivers. Contributions to Psychology John Bowlby’s research on attachment and child development left a lasting impression on psychology, education, child care, and parenting. Researchers extended his research to develop clinical treatment techniques and prevention strategies.?? His work also influenced other eminent psychologists, including his colleague Mary Ainsworth, who also made significant contributions to attachment theory by expanding on Bowlbys research to develop a method for observing a childs attachment to a caregiver. In a 2002 survey of psychologists published in the Review of General Psychology, Bowlby was ranked as the 49th most frequently cited psychologist of the 20th century. Key Publications Bowlby, J. How to Write an Annotated Bibliography (College Approved)

How to Write an Annotated Bibliography When doing a research paper, you’ll sometimes be required to provide an annotated bibliography. You may have heard of a bibliography before—but what is an annotated bibliography? Don’t worry! It’s really no big deal—and quite easy to write. This article will discuss the process of writing an annotated bibliography by giving you a template to see how it is constructed. It will also provide you with some examples in a variety of citation styles (MLA, APA and Chicago). We’ll also give you some topics that usually make for great annotated bib subjects. Let’s get started! What is an Annotated Bibliography / Definition An annotated bibliography is a list of references (in alphabetical order)—each reference followed by its own brief summary of the material it represents. A typical summary will be around 150 words, though it can certainly be more or less. The summary explains the reference by describing it, evaluating it, and communicating its relevance and/or quality. The purpose of the annotated bib is to provide the reader with a sense of what the reference material says and why it is important or helpful. Annotated Bibliography Template There is no single template for writing an annotated bib, so the best way to go through this section is to discuss the writing process and then provide a general format that can be used. The writing process should begin with the reference or source itself. Ask yourself a few questions: 1. What is it about? 2. Why did you choose the source and what did you learn from it? 3. Is it a quality source and what is your overall evaluation of it? 4. How is it relevant to your paper? To create an effective annotated bib, you should be able to apply critical thinking skills. You should also be able to provide a succinct summary of the work as well as an apt analysis and assessment of its utility. First, organize your materials: bring together all the books, magazines, websites and periodicals that you used to collect information. Second, cite the source according to style of your paper. Third, begin by identifying the theme of the source, summarizing its contents, and evaluating its overall delivery. You can discuss it in terms of other works that you have used. You can discuss it based on its own merits. You can discuss it as contrarian piece that offers a different take on a subject. It’s up to you. The basic template will look like this: Last name, First name. â€Å"Article Title.† Website, Day Month (abbreviated) Year published, URL. Accessed Day Month Year. Summarize the contents. Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the source material. Tell whether it is a worthwhile source or if it challenges other information that you found in the course of your study. Discuss how it helped shape your paper (if it did) or whether it should be considered a good source of information at all. That is essentially all there is to it! So now let’s see some examples. Annotated Bibliography Examples MLA Berrington, Eileen, Paivi Honkatukia. â€Å"An Evil Monster and a Poor Thing: Female Violence in Media.† Journal of Scandinavian Studies in Criminology and Crime Prevention, vol. 3, no. 1, 2002, pp. 50-72. This article compares two different representations of female violence in the news: reporting in England versus reporting in Finland. The study finds that the English press sensationalizes violence and reports on it with condemnatory tones, while the Finnish press reports objectively, without bias or judgment and even conveys a tone of empathy. The study is worthwhile because it shows how two different cultures create news to influence social thinking. The problem it uncovers is that culture plays a substantial role in how news reflects scenes of violence. It is a quality report and well-researched. For this paper, the study was helpful in showing how violence in the media can alter perceptions of guilt or innocence, and how media impact society in general. Jarvis, Brian. â€Å"Monsters Inc.: Serial killers and consumer culture.† Crime, Media,  Ã‚  Culture, vol. 3, no. 3, 2007, pp. 326-344. This study focuses on the serial killing as a pop culture industry. It examines how a number of films, books and TV series exploit the subject of serial killing and murder to consumers. The celebration of this grisly phenomenon is good for business. The claim that the study makes, however, is that serial killing as represented in the marketplace is a reflection of Western serial consumerism: it is the other side of the coin of empty materialism—the soul of humanity screaming and lashing out at the stark emptiness underlying consumerism. The study makes very good use of the material presented to draw the link between cultural obsessions with serial killing and cultural consumerism. It identifies the subject of murder as a gothic subject that appeals to the consumer, who is at root uneasy with and/or disappointed in his or her own consumerism. The study is helpful to this work because it highlights the manner in which the public will pursue subject matter that resonates with the soul, subject matter that reflects the state of mind and spirit of the times. Annotated Bibliography Examples APA Ciftci, S. (2012). Islamophobia and threat perceptions: Explaining anti-Muslim sentiment in the West. Journal of Muslim Minority Affairs, 32(3): 292-309. This study focuses on the anti-Muslim expressions within Western communities particularly in the wake of 9/11. Experiences are described in five countries: Spain, Germany, France, Britain, and the United States. The main finding is that Islamophobia is felt most strongly among uneducated non-Muslims. One general attitude expressed among non-Muslims surveyed is that Muslims support terrorism. The main reason cited for this finding is that ignorance prevails among society with regard to how terror cells are developed and who in fact supports and fosters them. The study is helpful for showing how Western society as a collective unit generally expresses suspicion of Islam and Muslims. The study could easily be combined with other studies on the subject that focus on media representations of terrorism and Muslims. For this work it is particularly helpful because it supports the argument that Western Islamophobia is both unfounded and at critical levels. Kaplan, J. (2006). Islamophobia in America?: September 11 and Islamophobic Hate Crime. Terrorism and Political Violence, 18: 1-33. This study examines the problems of Islamophobia in the United States and its linkage to 9/11. It chronicles the rise of hate crimes perpetrated against the Islamic community in the U.S. and describes the rise of hate crime perpetration in the years following the NYC terror attacks. The study clearly shows how Islamophobic attacks increased and grew out of a feeling of vengeance by Americans who felt they were under assault from an ethnic and ideological community. It works well with other studies, such as the one by Ciftci (2012) in explaining an Islamophobic Western attitude towards Islam in the 21st century. Annotated Bibliography Chicago Style Clinton, Hillary Rodham. What Happened. New York, NY: Simon and Schuster, 2017. Clinton provides a first-hand perspective and explanation of her doomed campaign for the presidency in 2016. The book is filled with personal anecdotes and colorful stories from the front lines of the election. It is a must read for any student of politics and provides a good glimpse into the mind of one of the most important candidates in modern politics. This work is very helpful for understanding what was going on in the Clinton camp and why Hillary believes she lost the election. Green, Joshua. Devil’s Bargain: Steve Bannon, Donald Trump, and the Storming of the Presidency. New York, NY: Penguin, 2017. This book provides an eye-witness account of the relationship between Steven Bannon and Donald Trump. It takes the reader on a tour-de-force exploration of how they achieved their unlikely quest the White House and what it meant for their followers. The book’s greatest quality is its intimacy of detail, as Green was given backstage access to a lot of what went on during the campaign. And you can determine whether they would be of use to a casual reader or how they compare to other sources that touch upon the same topics. When you go to write your annotated bibliography, there won’t be a lot of difference in how it looks from one citation style to the next. However, you should be aware of the purpose of the annotated bib and what you’re meant to do with it. It is not just a means of summarizing the material you used in your research. It is an evaluative tool and should give the reader some idea of whether the source material is any good. Don’t be afraid to give an opinion on the work and whether or not you would recommend it to others. But don’t get too carried away either—150 words should do the trick! Helpful Hints and Reminders 1. Summarize, describe, evaluate and rate. 2. 150 words on average for each source you use 3. Compare one work with another as you go to show how they differ 4. Note which sources you found the most helpful or useful and why

American University of Culture and Education Badaro Campus Management Information System The Role of MIS in the Decision-Making Process Problem solving and decision-making are two important skills for any business process. Problem solving often involves decision-making, which is mainly important for management and leadership. According to BusinessDictionary.com, decision-making is â€Å"The thought process of selecting a logical choice from the available options.† Thus, logical decision-making is an important part of all science-based professions, where specialists apply their knowledge in a given area to make suitable decisions. Management information and information systems, in particular tho se related to effective decision-making processes in an organization, are observed as valuable organizational resources. In fact, the increased value of information as a basic concept in recent times, coupled with the continued rise of computer-based information systems and the integration of separated information systems led Getz in 1982 to suggest coalescence as an expected chance. To explain the coalescence, Getz has seen the manager of an organization that results from this coalescence as a generalist, with a solid understanding of technology but with a better understanding of business conditions and needs. However, he is not without his unfairness for MIS managers, but he feels that they are the right professionals to play the role of information managers in the organization. We will write a custom essay sample on Mt 460-02 Management Policy and Strategy or any similar topic only for you Order Now 140). Key issues will be explored concerning Scotts Miracle-Gro’s external environment and solutions developed to maximize its opportunities or minimize its biggest threats. This comprehensive analysis will used to add value to the company and its consumers. Synopsis (Background) of the Situation The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company (Scotts), based in Marysville, Ohio, was formed by a 1995 merger of Miracle-Gro and the Scotts Company (Pearce Robinson, 2011, p. 26-1). The merger made Scotts the largest company in the North American lawn and garden industry as well as the world’s leading supplier and marketer of consumer products for do-it-yourself lawn and garden care (Pearce Robinson, 2011, p. 26-1). The Scotts Company was founded in 1868 by Orlando McLean Scott as a purveyor of weed-free seeds. By 1879, Scotts had diversified into distribution of horse-drawn farm equipment and also started a mail-order farm seed distribution channel. Scotts began offering grass seeds for lawns in 1907, distributing through retail channels beginning in 1924 (Pearce Robinson, 2011, p. 26-1). In 1928, Scotts introduced Turf Builder, the first fertilizer specifically designed for grass and started its spreader business with the introduction of drop spreaders in 1930; broadcast spreaders were rolled out in 1983 (Pearce Robinson, 2011, p. 6-1). Scotts acquired Republic Tool Manufacturing Company in 1992 and gained competencies in total quality control over spreader manufacturing (Pearce Robinson, 2011, p. 26-1). Ownership of the firm changed hands several times, beginning in 1971 when ITT bought Scotts from the Scotts family. In 1986, a leveraged buy-out (LBO) made Scotts a private company again for a time, until 1992, when its stock started trading on the NASDAQ (Pearce Robinson, 2011, p. 2 6-2). Miracle-Gro was founded in 1951 by Horace Hagedon (Pearce Robinson, 2011, p. 26-2). Unlike Scotts, Miracle-Gro had no internal production; all production was outsourced to contract manufacturers. Before the 1995 merger with Scotts, Miracle Gro was already a leading brand in the lawn care chemical industry (Pearce Robinson, 2011, p. 26-2). By early 2000, Scotts Miracle-Gro products were No. 1 in every major category and in virtually every major market in which they competed (Pearce Robinson, 2011, p. 26-2). Key Issues The three key issues facing Scott’s are increased domestic production costs, dependence on large scaled customers, and profitability below market average. The comparatively high plant and labor costs of the Temecula plant continues to be an issue to the growth of Scott’s Miracle-Gro. The key issues revolve around the idea that that is has become expensive to produce fertilizer spreaders and lawn seed by Scott’s Temecula plant. Another weakness that has been identified is Scott’s over dependent to customers, such as Home Depot and Wal-Mart, which account for 61% of the company’s sales (Mays, 2012). These large consumers have demanded a change in policy and production by â€Å"leaner inventories to end their fiscal years as well as to move shipments closer to the start of the lawn and garden season (Mays, 2012). Scott’s also has experienced lower sales in the international segment, tumbling 21 percent, while also missing revenue targets in 2011 due to sales declining by -2%, an 8% miss (Mays, 2012). Define the Problem The main problem to Scott’s survivability and health is the increasing cost of production for the Temecula plant, which manufactures products for Scott’s Miracle-Gro. These increasing costs are driven by the higher labor costs. These increased costs are also in conjunction with higher prices for raw materials, energy costs, and higher state taxes. Alternative Solutions The three possible solutions to alleviating this issue is outsourcing, hiring lower waged workers, or slightly lower wages and offer bonuses for meeting certain milestones. Outsourcing to China may not be the best solution because it would raise costs in the distribution channel, which is not a desirable outcome for the long-term. Also hiring an outside work-force willing to accept a lower wage could jeopardize quality but the new employees can be instructed on how to provide quality when manufacturing the products which would generate a short term increase in costs for training. The other alternative is to move the plan to more friendly manufacturing state and slightly lower current employees’ wages if it is considered that they are higher, and also to identify areas where money can be saved. This would retain human capital which has led to productivity improvements which have averaged six per cent per year (Pearce Robinson, 2011, p. 26-4). In this section, you demonstrate your expertise by identifying a couple of different ways to solve the problem you identified in the previous section! Selected Solution to the Problem The most economical and viable solution would be to move production outside of California. Areas where costs can be saved are in the distribution of the products and in the procurement of raw materials. Scott’s should search for areas where expenses can be lowered and costs cut but that does not diminish employee morale and job satisfaction which can negatively impact productivity. The state that has been selected is Utah which has right-to-work law on the books which means lower labor costs, Utah also has a favorable regulatory climate and Utah’s 5% flat corporate tax rate is one of the lowest in the country (Badenhausen, 2012). This has led to lower sales both domestically and internally diminishing their market share and global standing. Conclusion This concludes an in-depth analysis of Scotts Miracle-Gro. The major issue that has been identified and addressed is high internal costs of production at Scotts Temecula plant. A solution has been developed and implemented to alleviate above market expenses and to cut costs by moving production outside of California. China and other overseas markets have been excluded because quality issues would be raised and decreasing cost with just labor wages will not provide the solution to the problem, but will create other problems. A short term project plan has been identified in the report to be presented to executives and implemented by functional management. The implementation portion includes developing a project charter and identifying stakeholders within one month. A tepid budget will be created using figures submitted from the operations, procurement, human resources, and information technology departments during this process. The planning phase will also be concluded within one month developing a project scope and creating a WBS while also conducting a risk assessment of the move versus remaining in California. In addition this process will require the creating of a human resources and procurement plan. In three months Scott’s should be able to execute the plan provided which includes quality management of improvements of five percent above last year , procurement management reduce costs of raw material purchases, and human resource management to help reduce labor costs by ten percent. Information technology should have a network set up in this timeframe to protect integrity and integrate services between operations, sales, and distribution. The objectives should be established for the short-term and they will be monitored to determine if they are followed accordingly. This key issue is important and moving operations should not be the end-all-solution but the beginning of a continuous solution to achieve maximum consumer satisfaction and profitability. When appropriate measures are taken and if the corporate officers communicate and discuss the issue considering all the details, the best solutions will be reached to obtain long term objectives.
